Farenwide is built so your trips stay yours. Solo trips live only on your phone. Nothing is uploaded unless you share a trip with a travel party, and even then you choose what to share. We don’t sell your data, show ads, or use analytics to track you.
What stays on your phone
Your trips, plans, journal entries, recorded paths, photos, videos and voice memos are stored on your device. Deleting the app deletes them.
Permissions the app asks for
- Location — to show where you are on the map and, while you record a trip, to draw your path (including when the screen is off). Recording only runs when you start it, and stops when you stop it.
- Photos — to find photos and videos taken during a trip and pin them on your journal map, and to save photos you take in the app.
- Camera and microphone — to take photos and videos and record voice memos for your journal.
- Speech recognition — to turn dictation and voice memos into text. This uses Apple’s speech recognition, on your device where supported.
You can change any of these in your phone’s Settings at any time.
Accounts (optional)
You only need an account to share trips with a travel party. You can sign in with Apple, Google, Facebook or an email address. We receive your name, email address and a sign-in identifier from the provider you choose. Accounts are managed by Google Firebase Authentication.
Travel parties
When you share a trip, these are stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore and Cloud Storage, in Australia) so your party can see them:
- the trip’s plan (places, days, routes and settings);
- your name and, if you set one, your avatar photo;
- only the journal items you choose to share, with their photos, videos or voice memos;
- your recorded path, if Share my trail is on (you can turn it off at any time, which removes it).
Only members of the party can see a shared trip. You join a party with an invite code from someone already in it.
Services the app uses
- Mapbox provides the maps and route directions. To draw the map and routes, the app requests map data for the areas you view and the places you route between. Mapbox’s SDK may also send anonymous usage data to Mapbox. See Mapbox’s privacy policy.
- Apple Maps (iPhone) and Google Places (Android) look up the names of places you tap on the map.
- Google Firebase handles accounts and travel parties, as described above. See Firebase privacy.
- Apple, Google and Facebook sign-in, if you choose them.
- Anthropic (Claude) powers the optional AI features, which need you to be signed in. The travel assistant receives your messages and your trip’s title, dates and places. The AI story receives your journal’s captions, notes and times and, only if you allow it, small previews of your photos and videos. These are used to answer you and aren’t used to train AI models. We keep a count of how often you use AI features, not what you sent. See Anthropic’s privacy policy.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account in the app at any time, which removes everything you shared with travel parties. See how to delete your data.
Children
Farenwide isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information.
